Herbert, George

   Poet and Devotional Writer.
Herbert was a younger brother of the philosopher Edward Herbert. He was educated at the University of Cambridge, where he was appointed Public Orator in 1620. Influenced by Nicholas ferrar, he was ordained to the Church of England ministry in 1630. For the remaining years of his life he served as rector of the parish of Fugglestone, near Salisbury. His A Priest to the Temple: Or the Country Parson is an analysis of the ideal qualities to be found in a priest and has proved an inspiration to generations of clergy. However, he is mainly remembered as a devotional poet. Some of his verses, such as ‘Teach me my God and King’ and ‘The God of love my Shepherd is’, are still sung as hymns today. His poetry was much admired by later writers such as Henry vaughan and Samuel Taylor coleridge and it is generally regarded as distilling the very best in Anglican piety.
